Automatic sprinkler heads activate
when exposed to temperatures that would be excessive (usually about 165°F)
for
the particular area being protected. When activated, a valve opens,
releasing water stored in the attached piping. Heads activate individually,
preventing water from being released in areas that are not threatened by
fire.
Pendent heads are designed to be suspended below support piping. Upright
heads are installed above support piping. Sidewall heads have an articulated
deflector that directs most of the released water toward a wall.
Before 1953, all sprinkler heads could be used in either a pendent (hanging)
or upright position. After 1953, standard spray sprinklers were designated
for specific positions, either upright or pendent, to produce a more
predictable distribution pattern to protect the specific hazard.
There are over 50,000 types of sprinkler heads available
for designers to use in fire suppression applications, with variations in:
- System Type
- Activation Temperature
- Orifice Size
- Thread Size
- Coverage
- Finish
- Fusible Type
Displayed below are currently manufactured automatic
sprinkler heads and sprinkler heads from years past.
